The Santa Monica Beach House
is a significant expansion of a formerly 1,400 SF single-story cottage. The steeply sloping site with distant ocean views is in an area of restrictive ordinances, requiring public hearings and several rounds of design review for approval. The shingle style pays homage to the historic beach architecture. Windows are located to maximize views and draw light and air into the compact floor plan. A central atrium with a glass roof brings more light into the interior and organizes the second floor in parents and children wings.
