The Net Zero House is designed for a family that is set on "living green" in the city. We kept the footprint of their 1920's Spanish-style bungalow but demolished the interior and roof. A 2nd story was added, transforming it into a modern home filled with natural light. The windows, shading devices, insulation and "cool" metal roof were all designed to reduce the heat gain, while led lighting, and energy star appliances were used to reduce the home's energy needs. Construction and finish materials are from non-toxic, sustainable sources. The open plan was designed for family gatherings, with doors and porches at either end to extend the space for larger gatherings, while providing cross ventilation. Photovoltaic panels offset the electricity needs of the family while providing some extra electricity for their electric car. Native landscaping in the front reduces water usage, while vegetable beds in the rear yard produce much of the owner's food.
